第4回目のゲストは私がこれまで3度展示を開かせていただいたベンズ・カフェのオーナーさんです。コーヒー1杯+αの発信を常に心掛けている彼女にお話をうかがいました。
お名前をどうぞ。
外山 善子。
ご出身は？
東京。上落合出身でほとんど地元だったから、このあたり（高田馬場）好きなんだよね。
お仕事は？
カフェのオーナー。
お仕事以外で何に関心がありますか。
ジョニー・デップ！（笑）
壁をアーティストに開放しているのはいつからですか。
1996年9月のオープン以来。
今日、壁をアートの発表の場に提供しているカフェは多いですが、そのアイディアはどこから？
元々NYスタイル（以下NYS）のカフェを考えていたんだけど、NYSっていうのは結局NYでフランス人やイタリア人がカフェを開いたヨーロッパスタイルなのね。だからNYS=ヨーロッパスタイルなんだけど、何百年も続いているヨーロッパのカフェっていうのはアーティストをしっかりサポートしているのね。文化の交流がとても盛んで画家や文筆家がいろいろな意見をカフェで人々と交換していた。そういう雰囲気まるごとここに持ってきたかったのね。
述べ何人のアーティストが参加されたのですか。
えーっ、何人って言えないくらい多いよ。2週間に1回入れ代わって、もう11年だから…（CT注：単純計算で330名になります）
これまで多くのアーティストと接して、サポートされていらっしゃったから、さながら「アーティストの母」ですかね。
…母っていうか、姉くらいにしといてよ（笑）
ごめんなさい（笑）。でも壁のみならず、詩の朗読会や囲碁レッスン、DJナイトなど、いろいろイベントを常に催されていますね。お客さんにとっては飲食+αで楽しむことができますよね。
文化を発信するっていうことは常に文化を受け入れて、常に発信できる準備がないといけないの。あの（店の奥の）掲示板だって他のお客さんが何かを探している時に「はい、これなんかどうですか？」ってパッと紹介できるのよ。
なるほど。
うちは高級レストランでもないからカジュアルにいつも「こんにちは」ってスタンスなの。そうやって気軽にお客さんと交流していきたいのね。

As the forth guest, the owner of Ben's cafe where
I've done my shows three times at. She always cares about sending
out useful information to customers besides just serving a cup of
coffee.
May I have your name?
Yoshiko Toyama.
Where you are from?
Tokyo. Was born and raised in Kamiochiai, so I like this (Takadanobaba)
neighboarhoods very much.
What you do for living?
Own a cafe.
What interests you besides work?
Johnny Depp! (laugh)
How long you've opened your wall to artists?
Since this cafe has started, September 1996.
These days there are so many cafes in town open their walls for
artists, but where you get this idea from in the first place?
We've been thinking of NY style cafe (NYS) and in other words, NYS
is European style, which French or Italian people open their cafe
in NY. The European cafe has supported artist for long time and
people exchange view and culture there. We wanted to bring those
atomosphere as well here.
How many artists have had show here so far?
My, my, lots! Once every two weeks for 11 years, so... [note from
CT: 330 shows by my calculation]
So you are like "mother of artists," aren't you.
...well, I'd rather be called "older sister," not "mother."
(laugh)
Terribly sorry (laugh). But besides wall, you always organize
regular events like poetry reading, Igo lesson, DJ nite,
etc. It's nice for customers to have something extra and fun.
To send out culture requires to receive/accept cultures to be ready.
That bulletin board also can be useful to get info if you are looking
for something.
I see.
We're not posh restaurant or anything.
We're casual cafe to say "hi, how are you today?"
That's how we comminicate with customers.
